Martin Scorsese, the Oscar-winning director, is set to direct a Ramones' biopic to mark the band's 40th anniversary.
According to Billboard, the biopic aims to be part of a celebration of the band to mark four decades since their self-titled debut LP. No further details have been announced - although we suspect it's that rare instance where Scorsese won't be dialing Leonardo DiCaprio's number.
This is not the first musical biopic that Scorsese has been linked to: as previously reported he was due to direct the story of Bob Marley's life before leaving the project for Jonathan Demme to take over.
The Ramones biopic is part of a series of much larger scheme to celebrate the band's legacy. Plans include a documentary featuring largely unseen footage and, improbably enough, a musical.
Jeff Jampol, who manages the band's estate, explained there is also going to be a lavish coffee table book. “You’ll see a book coming, which is not a biographical book so much, but a story of the band’s formation and those first few records and that craziness that happened. It’ll be a combination of prose, photographs and memorabilia and posters, just kind of documenting the scene. The Ramones were the first punk band and they started the punk movement.”
