Gotye, the man behind 2011 megahit 'Somebody That I Used To Know' – has formed a political party with his band The Basics.

Gotye - real name Wally De Backer - plays in the band with Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath. They announced the formation of a Basics Rock'n'Roll Party (BRRP) on Facebook to run on 29 November in the Victorian State elections in Australia as a reaction against "life long politicians."

"Politics in this country is treated like it belongs to the elite," Schroeder told AAP. "We have these career politicians who often come from well-to-do families ... and they are groomed in to becoming these life-long politicians that have no other life experience outside of either being in the young Liberals or young Labor, and becoming a Member of Parliament." The party are focused primairly on "innovation, education and rock 'n' roll' and have outlined a manifesto here.

The band recently recorded at Abbey Road and will be releasing their EP The Lucky Country due out in October that features song titles including 'Whatever Happened to the Working Class?' and 'Operation Sovereign Basics.'  There most recent albums include the Golden Echo and, somewhat appropriately, My Brain's Off (And I Like It).
