D’Angelo's shock release of his new album Black Messiah was brought forward by his horror over the Ferguson verdict.
According to the New York Times, the album was set for release in the Spring (after a 14 year wait) but the singer wanted to bring the release forward following his shock at the decision not to indict Darren Wilson over his shooting of the unarmed Michael Brown.
The producers pulled overnight shifts with the team often working till 4am to rush release the album.
"We were able to put six months worth of work into two weeks" said D'Angelo's publisher Jocelyn Cooper. In fact the album is so hot of the presses that there wasn't time to compile an official lyric book for the CD release (for now you can use Genius or wait for the vinyl release).
The article also reveals that D'Angelo had to settle on a different font for the album artwork and also had to settle with a photo rather than his original intention to use a piece of specially commissioned artwork by Emory Douglas.

Other revelations from the article include the fact that the album was recored entirely to two-inch reel-to-reel tape. Almost 200 reels of tape used before the album was completed which meant that the recording cost alone was “more than most budgets for entire projects.”
