The director of Kurt Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck has said that the frontman died of a broken heart.

Talking to NME, Morgan says that following his own research into the Nirvana frontman, his suicide note did not fit with the personality of the man whose life he had been investigating.

"I found his actual suicide letter, which was unexpected," he said. "I just opened up this heart shaped box and there it was. And I was like 'Based on everything I've witnessed, this makes no sense.' Kurt didn't have a problem with quitting music; he talked about it openly. If he wanted to stop performing, he would just stop. Nothing was leading up to that suicide letter."

Morgan revealed that Cobain's need for a family and his fears that Courtney Love would cheat on him prompted him towards suicide. "It was ultimately about his search for family," Morgan continued. "He didn't feel like he had a family, but he desperately wanted one. So the second that Nirvana broke he asked Courtney to have a child."

Morgan is clear that "Kurt Cobain died of a broken heart. He thought his wife cheated on him, and her and Frances were all he had. The film invests a lot in trying to understand why Kurt would react the way he did to betrayal. We try to find the square root of it."

Frances Bean, Cobain's daugher, recently discussed the new documentary about her father, with Rolling Stone, calling it “emotional journalism”. “It's the closest thing to having Kurt tell his own story in his own words – by his own aesthetic, his own perception of the world,” she explained “It paints a portrait of a man attempting to cope with being a human.

“When Brett and I first met, I was very specific about what I wanted to see, how I wanted Kurt to be represented,” she continued. “I told him, ‘I don't want the mythology of Kurt or the romanticism.’ Even though Kurt died in the most horrific way possible, there is this mythology and romanticism that surrounds him, because he's 27 forever. The shelf life of an artist or musician isn't particularly long. Kurt has gotten to icon status because he will never age. He will always be that relevant in that time and always be beautiful.”

Montage Of Heck is released nationwide in UK cinemas today (10 April).
