As summer ends, we celebrate the records that have soundtracked the year so far
Death From Above 1979 - The Physical World: After 10 years away, DFA 1979 needed a reason to come back - and they've certainly found it. Their immaculate debut You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, paved the way for legions of two-piece copyists, but their long-awaited second effort more than proves that no one does quite like these guys. Still containing the brutal intensity of their debut, The Physical Word carries their sound to a more widescreen arena, with a greater knack for a monolithic chorus. May it move your feet and melt your face.
You can already feel the summer sun setting as winter takes hold. While the end of the year draws near, we can't help but reflect on what an incredible amount of brilliant albums we've heard in 2014 so far. Here are 50 of the best.
Last year may have seen the return of the likes of Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and David Bowie, but 2014 has seen some utterly staggering releases across all genres - making for a soundtrack that's as eclectic as it is compelling.
From returning giants to exquisite debuts, old favourites to middling acts truly upping their game, there have been so many truly great records that ranking them at the end of the year is going to be one hell of a mission. So for now, here are 50 of the best albums of 2014 so far.
