Shifting further away from the experimental ethos of 2004’s much lauded, ‘They Were Wrong So We Drowned,’ ‘House Clouds’ sees Liars forego all fragmentation and flair in favour of a much more practical approach – one based on more traditional song structures and scales. Synth and drums still resonate throughout of course, blanketed by Angus Andrew’s entrancing falsetto. However, whilst the instrumentation might pound and pulsate, disappointingly, the band seems to have forgotten about writing an actual tune, choosing to cobble together a stale Happy Mondays groove with a Beck-like bass grind. Tedious.
Released 29/10/07 on Mute.
