Missy Elliott is back - and taking full control with the resurgence of her career in 2015. She’s marked her territory with a new Instagram account and is sure to be releasing new songs after her storming collaboration with Pharrell, ‘WTF’.
‘WTF (Where They From?)’ is a track with endless amounts of momentum and energy, reminiscent of her recent Bestival headline show, with Missy’s raw and arresting style inspiring Pharrell to take his singing hat off, dust off that pen and pad and spit a pretty great verse. “Lyrically I’m / Optimus Prime.” We’re not wuite sure about that Pharrell, but we still admire the change of direction.
Missy is also the undeniable queen of the hip-hop music video, leaving a swell of other R&B artists and beyond in the dust with some of the coolest and out there visuals you’re ever likely to come across, unless you’re a big David Lynch fan.
The ‘WTF’ video features incredible dancing puppets, eerie locations, frenetic cuts and Missy donned in a number of outrageously great outfits, as well as some crazy dance moves throughout. It was also directed by Missy herself.
In a recent interview that covered a range of subjects, Pharrell spoke about Missy’s influence on her groundbreaking music videos. She currently has nineteen videos under her prolific belt.
We’re guessing there wil be more on the way if this single is announcing her first studio album since The Cookbook over ten years ago. WIth this in mind, let’s take a peek at some of her best music videos.
'Work It' - 2002
The lady is getting her DJ on with a swarm of bees on her face. Enough said.
'Get Ur Freak On' - 2001
Missy makes her way through some kind of post apocalyptic sewer with Mad Max Nicholas Hoult lookalikes, before her neck stretches miles away from her body in the most trippy of moments.
'The Rain [Supa Dupa Fly]' - 1997
If you forgot about this track, shame on you. Missy and all of her dancers appear to be tripping balls as their heads morph and tounges swing around like drugged up pythons. Also, check out Timbaland's incredible dance moves.
'She's A Bitch' - 1999
With a budget of over two million dollars, this was one of the most expensive music videos ever produced. Missy went all out with dark, dystopian visuals and some insane costumes that made her look the flyest super-villain of all time.
