A Twitter user has been banned from contacting Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for five years, after sending the star abusive messages on the social network.

Martin and Countdown presenter Rachel Riley were targeted by Anthony Wells during an online hate campaign, which included online harrassment of the presenter and death threats. Wells admitted the charges against Riley, and after doing so, Chris Martin did not pursue separate charges against the man, who has since been sentenced to a hospital order under the Mental Health Act.

"Mr Martin indicated that a plea to the charge involving Ms Riley would be acceptable to ensure that Mr Wells gets the medical help he needs and that he was content for us to not proceed in relation to the remaining charge," said Punam Malhan, prosecutor of Basildon Crown Court, reports The BBC.

"Taking Mr Martin's view into account, we decided it was no longer in the public interest to continue with the second charge of harassment," he continuted. "Everyone should be able to go about their daily lives free from harassment caused by someone deliberately making offensive, violent messages about them on social media."
