Candian lesbian rock band Vag Halen, described as "the most powerful all-female band in rock history" by critic Chuck Klosterman, have hit out at misogyny in the music industry.
As reported by The Independent, the band are set to appear at Bournemouth's Arts By The Sea festival this week. This act specialize in covers of Guns N'Roses, Led Zeppelin and Motorhead tracks, albeit delivered in an art-rock feminist fashion.
“When Robert Plant sings 'Whole Lotta Love', he’s a man impersonating a woman having an orgasm," singer Vanessa Dunn told The Independent. "When I sing it and use those stage antics with microphone as a woman, doesn’t it make more sense?”
The band were inspired by a deep rooted love of rock'n'roll and it's aesthetic, notably Tawny Kitaen the model who featured in Whitesnake's videos. Dunn describes her as “the most-beautiful, powerful woman in the world. But I also realised the portrayal of women was problematic and there was a power dynamic at play”.
Dunn manages the delicate task of appreciating a band's songs but despising their believes, exemplfiied by Axl Rose who she describes as “a misogynist asshole, although he looked beautiful and feminine”.
The band make their debut UK performance this week at the Bournemouth Arts By The Sea Festival on 9 October and their first ever London show at the Dreamland Social Club at the Alley Cat on 11 October.
