Katy Perry is set to perform at the Super Bowl half time show on 1 February 2015 in Glendale Arizona.

According to Billboard, Perry beat both Coldplay and Rihanna, who were both potentially being considered. It would appear a great call on the part of the the NFL to have Perry perform - she's a prime stadium act with a huge fanbase - but also works for the singer herself, particularly given her new album hasn't quite managed to achieve the heights of her previous work (her two most recent singles 'Birthday' and 'This Is How We Do' have sunk without trace, thanks in part to some deeply questionable videos).

Perry is also unlikely to provoke outrage, even by the incredibly stringent standards of American TV: there won't be an exposed nipple (like Janet Jackson in 2004) or a flashed middle finger (MIA in 2012) to be seen.

Last year's performance received 111.5 million TV viewers.  Controversially the NFL do not pay artists to perform but insist the vast exposure is considered worth it. Recently it was claimed that the NFL were even considering charging performers for the privilege of playing.

"In a twist this year, the league has asked artists under consideration for the high-profile gig to pay to play," wrote the Wall Street Journal. Speaking to ESPN's College Game Day last week however Perry announced "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl.
