The earliest archive footage of The Clash, including their live performance at The Roxy on 1 January 1977, has been revealed in a new documentary.

Shot by band associate and filmmaker Julien Temple, The Clash New Year's Day '77 features footage of Joe Strummer and co. performing at newly rebranded punk nightclub The Roxy on 1 January 1977, including the debut live performance of “I’m So Bored With the U.S.A.”

In a new BBC documentary available on iPlayer, Temple has unleashed that footage for the first time. The documentary has also surfaced on Youtube (see below). As the BBC explains: "Unknown to the unsuspecting British public, 1977 was of course the annus mirabilis of punk. The year in which the Clash themselves took off, catching the imagination of the nation's youth. As their iconic song, 1977, counts us down to midnight, we'll share with them and Joe Strummer, in previously unseen interviews from the time, their hopes and predictions for the 12 months ahead."
