A few minutes late, James Bay rushes into our interview room with something of a dazed look on his face. "I'm sorry, something weird just happened. I've just got a text saying my New York show sold out in two minutes."

Ever since he was invited, last minute, to replace an unwell Lana Del Rey on Radio 1's Live Lounge, James Bay's popularity has been ever on the increase. The day before we chat to him at Eurosonic Festival, he picked up his BRITs Critics' Choice award, and wrote on Facebook, "It's finally real."

The process of making music hasn't always come easily to Bay though. He tells us, "It's a whole different challenge when you're writing about something that means something to you. It can be painful, that's definitely one way to explain it. I'll explain it a million other ways I'm sure, but it can be a bit like pulling teeth at times... That also makes it fantastic."

Like most people under 30, Bay also admits to being a victim of the digital age: "People's attention spans are shorter, my attention span is shorter - because of the internet. Which can get really confusing. It's a very immediate medium."
