George Michael fans are campaigning for a Hampstead Heath bench to become a memorial to the singer- the same bench he appeared on alongside Ricky Gervais in a cameo in Extras.

An online petition - launched by lead campaigner Tony Antoniou - has been set up in an attempt to persuade the council to agree to make the bench a permanent memorial.
"His Fans will love this and will agree to it. It's the least they can do as this was his favourite and local park. I'm sure his family will love it too" Antoniou said on the online petition page.

He continued: “George Michael loved Hampstead Heath park so much. It was his favourite park and he would often go there for some time to himself."

Michael appeared as an exaggerated version of himself at the Hampstead Heath bench in the Extras Christmas Special in 2007. He asks Ricky Gervais' character Andy Millman to "keep an eye out for paparazzi" as he spends a lunch break from community service in the park.

Michael reveals in the scene that he was caught by the police while fly-tipping Annue Lennox's fridge freezer, before telling Gervais “Sting called the fucking council because he’s a fucking do-gooder.”

Ricky Gervais - who posted the scene to Facebook following Michael's death - has shared news of the petition to his 4 million followers on the site, which should help the petition gain more traction.

The petition currently has over 700 supporters.

George Michael was found dead at his home on Christmas Day.
