Reformed shoegazers Ride have shared the video for their new single, ‘Cali’ – and you can watch it here below.
It’s the fourth single to be lifted from the band’s fifth studio album, Weather Diaries, and it’s the first to be released since 1996’s Tarantula. Ride have also had a pretty busy summer doing the festival rounds. Having played Glastonbury in June, the band have gone on to perform at the Manchester International Festival, Latitude and a first night headline slot last weekend’s Green Man festival in Wales.
On top of that, they’re also embarking on a seven-date headline tour in November before opening for Mogwai in Glasgow in December. See the dates below.
The video for ‘Cali’ catches that hazy, end-of-the-summer feeling that we’re all subliminally going through. Focussing on a couple of surfers, the video is punctuated with moments of psychedelia which fits in perfectly with Ride’s effects-driven aesthetic. Factor in the lush harmonies of Mark Gardner and Andy Bell and you’ve got a winner on your hands.
Speaking of the video, guitarist Andy Bell said:”’Cali’ is a love song which features imagery of California and the ocean, so a video which features a surfing couple was the perfect fit.
“What I love about the video is that it avoids some of the surf film / retro clichés and stays with a contemporary kind of look. The psychedelic nature of the editing is more in line with the Vaporwave aesthetic than 60’s psychedelia. What director Niall Trask has come up with got an immediate thumbs up from the entire band and is my favourite Ride video to date.”
