Disclosure have admitted that they thought their 'Latch' collaborator Sam Smith was a woman when they first heard him sing.

Speaking to Billboard for their new cover feature in the US magazine, Guy and Howard Lawrence were discussing the making of 'Latch', a track that was released in the UK in 2012 but is only just taking the US by storm.

Explaining how they had first heard Smith on his track 'Lay Me Down', Howard recalled how they had met. "We asked about him and found out that he was just some guy working in a bar, and that he wasn't a musician, well, y'know, he wasn't a professional musician," said Howard.

"We got in the studio with him, that was the first day we met him, [and] we just kinda thought, 'Oh yeah, this sounds good.' That was the day we wrote 'Latch''and yeah, we were blown away."

Thanks to his signature falsetto vocals, the brothers were also surprised to learn that Smith was not a woman. "I was kinda blown away to find out that he wasn't a girl," added Howard.

'Latch' is currently sitting at No 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, Smith is also making waves across the pond in his own right - his single 'Stay With Me' is currently at No 5 in the US chart, whilst his debut album In The Lonely Hour debuted at the No 2 spot.
