Aerosmith earned more money from appearing on the video game Guitar Hero than they did from sales of any of their own albums, it has been revealed.
Chief executive for American video game publisher Activision, Bobby Kotick, has announced that American rock band Aerosmith earned more money from the licensing of their songs and image for the popular video game.
Quoted by MTV Multiplayer at Activision's analyst day, Kotick said: "[Their] version of Guitar Hero generated far more in revenues than any Aerosmith album ever has.
"Merchandising, concert sales, their ability to sign a new contract [have] all been unbelievably influenced by their participation in Guitar Hero."
Kotick also noted that the exposure gained from the video game helped the band attract new fans as well as renew the interest of their traditional fanbase.
While the news isn't greatly surprising given that bands have traditionally made more money from live performances and the sales of merchandise, the claim does suggest a potential new digital direction now available to bands keen on following Aerosmith's money-making footsteps.
