Foo Fighters brought the first ever Invictus Games to an epic close last night (Sunday 14 September), on a day that also saw performances from the likes of Ellie Goulding, Kaiser Chiefs, Frank Turner, Ryan Adams and more.
After paying tribute to the wounded soldiers from around the world that the games were in aid of, Invictus organiser Prince Harry welcomed headlining act Foo Fighters on the stage erected at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
"I can hear Dave Grohl screaming at me from behind," said His Royal Highness at one point in his speech, before jokingly adding "He's really old, come on."
He embraced frontman Dave Grohl before the band promptly burst into 'All My Life' and the crowd erupted in a wild roar - finally enjoying the main event after the band's week of 'secret' and intimate club gigs.
What followed was a short but full-throttle 11-song set, with the band well aware of their limited time to run through their normally mammoth sets - barely pausing for breath as their blasted through a run of hits.
"We haven't been here in a few years," said Dave Grohl at one point. "It's been a while since we played in this country. So I got a call from a friend who called me up and said 'Can I give Prince Harry your number'? So I said OK - everyone else has it."
He then went on to dedicate 'My Hero' to the wounded warriors who had competed in the Games. The highlight of the set was by far the sheer bewilderment on many concert-goers faces as the more hardcore among the audience howled their way through a volatile rendition of 'White Limo'.
What resounded most throughout, was how fitting Foo Fighters were to close the day, with every track played being two fingers in the face of adversity, about overcoming adversity and everyday victories. Well, apart from 'White Limo', which is just about a white limo.
Foo Fighters played:
All My Life
Times Like These
The Pretender (With Sonic Highways Interlude)
Learn to Fly
My Hero (Dedicated to all the athletes at the Games)
White Limo
Arlandria
Cold Day in the Sun
Walk
Best of You
Everlong
