If you've ever wondered what the secret was behind Nirvana's Nevermind album - it may well have been a space heater.

According to the album's producer Butch Vig, who also drums for Garbage, the band practised so much for their second album because their own apartment was so cold.

Speaking at the Yellow Phone Music Conference, Vig said: "Before they came in, they rehearsed every day for six months - ten hours a day. Contrary to the slacker attitude, Kurt wanted to have a hit record, he wanted to make a really good sounding album.

"They were living in a really floppy, shitty apartment up in the northwest, and the rehearsal space had a space heater."

He continued, "So they would go in there and it would be warm and they would go in there and play until 10, 11 o'clock at night and then they'd go back to their apartment."

Nevermind became a surprise success when it was released in 1991 - it eventually reached No.1 in the US, and has since sold over 30 million copies worldwide.
