Youtube finally signs licensing deal with independent labels

Youtube has finally signed a licensing deal with the big independent labels.

The dispute started after the video streaming service altered its terms and conditions in preparation for its music streaming service. Unhappy with the terms, the independent labels, including XL, Domino and more were at risk of having their material removed from the site.

Represented by WIN (World Independent Network), the labels accused the company of lowballing their fees, especially in comparison to other services like Spotify. Now, the New York Times reports that they have signed a licensing deal through Merlin, a global not for profit rights agency, with the terms remaining as of yet unreported.

Details of Youtube's streaming service are also sparse currently, however previous reports point towards both a free service and a "premium tier". As with other services, paying customers will recieve perks including ad-free and offline listening.
