The founding member of groundbreaking German electronic band Tangerine Dream has now passed away in Vienna, aged 70.

Edgar Froese died unexpectedly on Tuesday after a pulmonary embolism. The band posted on Facebook later that week: This is a message to you we are very sorry for… On January 20th, Tuesday afternoon, Edgar Froese suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from the effects of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna. The sadness in our hearts is immensely. Edgar once said: ‘There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address’ Edgar, this is a little comfort to us.”

Tangerine Dream were known for the psychedelic sound and trance-like use of synthesiser sound which became a significant influence on the development of electronic music. The group were formed in 1967 and was born out of the same Krautrock scene that gave birth to other influential groups such as Kraftwer, Cluster, Neu! and Can.

Just before Froese sadly passed away, he completed work on his 500-page autobiography ‘Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure - 1967 - 2014’ which is available for pre-order here.
