The Pet Shop Boys have been declared as recipients of the Godlike Genius Award at the VO5 NME Awards 2017.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe will receive the award at the ceremony at Brixton Academy on February 15, and play a closing set of their biggest hits.
The pair, who formed in 1981, have gone on to sell over 50 million records, amass 32 Top Thirty singles and thirteen Top ten albums, have been declared the most successful music duo of all time by the Guinness Book Of Records.
NME editor Mike Williams said: “For three decades, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have been pushing the boundaries of pop music, releasing a series of consistently excellent singles and albums and working to blur the boundaries between art, music and social commentary. Their influence on pop culture is undeniable and the list of artists they’ve worked with is a mini rock ’n’ roll hall of fame. Pet Shop Boys’ stage performances and festival shows are never anything short of spectacular, and we’re honoured that our latest close the VO5 NME Awards 2017.”
Previous winners of the ceremony’s most prestigious award have included The Cure, Dave Grohl, Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Blondie, Suede and Coldplay. Beyonce, The 1975, Bastille, Skepta and Christine & The Queens lead the list of nominees at the awards.
