Vancouver six-piece Brasstronaut have unveiled their new single 'Sooner Or Later' taken from their forthcoming self-titled new album, out 3 March. Check it out first on Gigwise below.
Wistful indie folk vocals are set against a polyphonic backdrop of jazzy brass parts, a gently picked guitar and a dominant lead riff. But it doesn't stay this way, the tune gradually builds into something wholly different and exciting to dance to.
The latter half incorporates a more uptempo falsetto vocal that would fit in an Aussie electro pop group like MGMT or Empire Of The Sun. But instead of synths, the arrangement is entirely organic. We hear Afrobeat rhythms combine with wigged-out brass and the electric guitars take a backseat allowing the bass to shine.
Thematically, the tune comments on the culture of disposable music created by the internet.
The band say: “By compiling various titles of pop songs into a cohesive string of lyrics - a Frankenstein pop song - 'Sooner or Later' is a commentary on the culture of disposable music created by the internet, instant gratification, and the influence of money in the arts. What does it take to create an artistic ‘product’? Where did we lose our connection with music? How come society is losing its value in the arts? When did we stop making up our own minds about what is good? Why don’t we do anything about it?”
